Peer-to-peer relief: Pine Island Elementary Students Concert to Benefit New Orleans Area Elementary School

At a time when residents throughout the country are questioning the quality and quantity of government assistance for Gulf Coast areas decimated by hurricane Katrina, the students of Pine Island Elementary School have found a way to reach out and touch their fellow students in Louisiana in a dramatic way.

Pine Island students are rehearsing a concert to show that kids have the ability to help other kids.  The entire school will be presenting a benefit relief concert on December 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Warwick High School auditorium. Each student has given up one recess a week for the past two months to put together an evening of entertainment for the extended community families and friends.
The students and parents wrote the script, which includes what they have researched about the music, dance, food, and culture of New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama. They will be sending a DVD of the show, along with their words of support to the school they selected to be the recipient of the donations.
The students selected the Woodmere Elementary School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Woodmere’s school mascot is the Wildcat, just like Warwick’s.  Their school lost everything in the flooding of New Orleans.  The students’ relief efforts will be specifically designated to help Woodmere purchase textbooks and school supplies.
$3.00 per person is a suggested donation. There will also be a regional food tasting, prepared by Pine Island’s Sweet Peas & Dirt Club for your purchase. The C.P.R. Concert is Thursday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Warwick High School auditorium.  Parking is free; follow the signs to the right of the main entrance. Call Pine Island School at 987-3190 for ticket information. There will also be limited tickets at the door.
