Richard entered the jazz world as a bassist, playing clubs in Salt Lake City, Washington, D.C., and New York, where he earned two degrees in compopsition from the Julliard School, and was awarded the Alexandre Gretchanninof Memorial Prize in Composition, in 1967. He studied with Stanley Wolfe, Vittorio Giannini, Vincent Persichetti, and Luciano Berio, and later taught composition and music theory at the Julliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and William Paterson University. In addition to his own appearances, and those with the Lloyd McNeil Group, Kimball has concertized extensively with the Thiago de Mello Amazon band in New York, Nicaragua, and Brazil, and recorded with jazz vocalist, Vivian Lord. He has composed several chamber music film scores for award winning PBS documentaries, the most notable being his recent score for Grow Old Along With Me, hosted by the late Richard Kiley, and with Julie Harris, James Earl Jones, and others.
Included in Richard’s palette of musical activities are fund-raising jazz concerts of original compositions and arrangements for the benefit of Amazonia Project, Inc., a charitable organization which he founded in 1991 to bring dental health care to certain indigenous populations in the Brazilian rain forest. Richard lives, composes, and records with his wife and two sons in New Milford, (Warwick Township), New York. You can hear Richard, as pianist and musical director, at The River Café in New York, where he is celebrating his 29th year.
