Hawk's Nest (in Deerpark)
A windy road overlooking the Delaware, with several places for scenic overlooks.
Head north from Warwick onto Route 17 north, then take Interstate-84 to exit 1 (Port Jervis), to East Main St., onto West Main St., to Route 97. As you may recognize, this road is the venue for many television commercials for cool sportscars.

Route 17A at Mt. Peter and Greenwood Lake
Regardless of which direction you start from, when you reach the fire lookout station and bird watching promontory on Cain Road (at the Route 17A intersection, you will be rewarded with two extraordinary views: one, looking south toward Greenwood Lake, about five miles away (on 17A); the second, overlooking the entire Warwick Valley area. The best seating for the scenic overview is at the picnic tables adjacent to a homemade ice cream parlor, called Bellvale Creamery, a cute little place named after one of the oldest hamlets in Warwick. Warning: Eating this ice-cream is habit-forming.

Seven Lakes Drive (Harriman State Park)
Take Route 17 South to Exit 131A onto Route 6. At the first circle turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive
for a long, windy road through a scenic forest, passing seven pristine lakes that are the source of the name.

Pine Island and the Black Dirt Region
Driving in this region used to be problematic, before this extensive swamp area was drained by brilliant Polish and German engineers to reveal a rich, productive farming region, originally formed 12,000 years ago by a glacial lake. Look for the extensive onion fields and other vegetables. Wawayanda creek, that flows through the Village of Warwick, is part of the river system that drains this region. It flows south into Vernon, NJ, and meets up with Pochuck Creek, heading north into Pine Island where it joins the Walkill River, which began deep in Sussex County, NJ, near Lake Hopatcong. Note: A good restaurant in this neighborhood is "Ye Jolly Onion Inn." The river continues north, passing Middletown and other points of interest throughout Orange County, before it reaches the Hudson River near the town of Kingston.
