The Village College received a generous grant from the Warwick Grove Company and will be offering courses this winter at half price. These courses are open to anyone in the surrounding community (though some class sizes are limited). Village College classes provide a friendly environment in which to explore old interests and new ideas with talented local residents.

Look for Village College brochures at various stores in the Village of Warwick and surrounding areas. Everyone is welcome.

Introductory Figure Drawing
4 Tuesdays, Jan. 11—Feb. 1, 7:00-9:00 pm. Warwick Valley Community Center

This introductory figure drawing class is open to all levels of student – from beginner to advanced. The class will feature a live unclothed model working in a variety of poses and will focus on quick, gestural drawings and longer figure studies. We will discuss the elements of figurative work and attendees are encouraged to share their ideas and techniques in a quiet, meditative and creative environment. This course will provide the foundation for further figure studies with an established local figure drawing group, for those interested in continuing. Offered by Janet Howard-Fatta. Cost: $30, plus model fee.


Handwriting Analysis
6 Sundays, Jan. 16—Feb. 20, 7:30-9:00 pm. Albert Wisner Library, Warwick

This course presents a study of the individual strokes in handwriting in order to identify the character and personality of the writer. Topics include: Emotions, Mental Processes, Imagination, Forces to Achieve, Fears, Defenses, Integrity, Social Traits and Aptitudes. Recognizing stroke combinations and evaluations will be topics of discussion (course material included). This course is taught by a Certified Handwriting Analyst from the International Graphoanalysis Society. Cost: $30. Offered by Larry Jones.


Organic Wines & Sustainable Agriculture
4 Mondays, Jan 10-31, 7:30-9:00 pm. Penra Wine Store, 36 Main St., Warwick

This course will introduce to all wine lovers a new generation of organic wines—or biodynamic viticulture—in the context of the movement for a sustainable agriculture. This is a wine tasting course, for beginners up to the connoisseur, with an emphasis on distinguishing the "terroir" of organic wines: the physical and environmental characteristics that affect them. Great BIG Books: The Man Without Qualities (cont’d)
Sundays once a month, 7:30-9:00 pm, Albert Wisner Library, Warwick

Still intending to read those great classics you always meant to read? Here’s your chance! This course will meet once a month to read the big books. The first series took up Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time (or Remembrance of Things Past), working through all seven volumes. The current book is Robert Musil’s magnificent masterpiece, The Man Without Qualities. Subsequent series will include: Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes, and others. It’s not too late to join in. Next meeting Jan. 9. Cost: $30. Offered by Paul Kane.


Terrific tiny Books
4 Mondays, Jan. 17—Feb. 7, 7:30-9:00 pm. Albert Wisner Library, Warwick

Too busy to read? Try a tiny book. This course will read very short books in a very small format so even the busiest people can find time to read and then enjoy a lively discussion in a relaxed atmosphere. The books are all classics: Flatland by Edwin Abbot; The Man Who Planted Trees by Jean Giono; Poems by Emily Dickinson; and Sailing Alone Around the World by Captain Joshua Slocum. Cost: $30. Creation of Third World Dependency
2 Sundays, Jan. 9 and 23, 7:30-9:00 pm. Tuscan Café, Warwick

This course will explicate and interpret the thesis of John Perkins, author of the recent book, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, which exposes the international intrigue and corruption behind government and corporate activities in the Third World and elsewhere. Cost: free. Offered by Trent Schroyer and Tula Tsalis.


VILLAGE COLLEGE STAFF

Janet Howard-Fatta received her BFA in painting at Pratt Institute in New York. An avid painter and designer, her paintings and drawings explore the figure and the environment. Her most recent show is on exhibit at Coldwell Banker Currier & Lazier Realtors in their new location, 81 Ronald Reagan Blvd., Warwick, through Jan. 14, 2005.

Larry Jones is a Certified Handwriting Analyst and has been a member of the International Graphoanalysis Society, Inc. since 1991. His business has been in existence since 1994. Website: www.Grapho-Tech.com.

Paul Kane teaches at Vassar College. He is the recipient of fellowships from the NEH and the Guggenheim Foundations.

Trent Schroyer is Professor of Sociology-Philosophy in the School of Theoretical and Applied Science at Ramapo College in New Jersey, where he is also Co-Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies.

Penny Steyer is owner of Penra: The Wine Store of Warwick, and serves on the advisory board of The Warwick Conservancy.

Tula Tsalis, a teacher and activist, is Secretary of The Other Economic Summit (TOES) and Coordinator of the Mid-Atlantic Sustainable Communities Network.
